Matenadaran

Description

The Matenadaran, officially the Mesrop Mashtots Institute of Ancient Manuscripts, is a museum, repository of manuscripts, and a research institute in Yerevan, Armenia. It is the world’s largest repository of Armenian manuscripts.
It was established in 1959 on the basis of the nationalized collection of the Armenian Church, formerly held at Etchmiadzin. Its collection has gradually risen since its establishment, mostly from individual donations. One of the most prominent landmarks of Yerevan, it is named after Mesrop Mashtots, the inventor of the Armenian alphabet, whose statue stands in front of the building.

Le Matenadaran, officiellement l’Institut Mesrop Mashtots des manuscrits anciens, est un musée, un dépôt de manuscrits et un institut de recherche à Erevan, en Arménie. C’est le plus grand dépôt au monde de manuscrits arméniens.
Il a été créé en 1959 sur la base de la collection nationalisée de l’Église arménienne, anciennement conservée à Etchmiadzine. Sa collection s’est progressivement enrichie depuis sa création, principalement grâce à des dons de particuliers. L’un des monuments les plus importants d’Erevan, il porte le nom de Mesrop Mashtots, l’inventeur de l’alphabet arménien, dont la statue se dresse devant le bâtiment.
