Description

The Azerbaijani language belongs to the Oghuz subgroup of the Turkic languages. The Oguz language appeared in the region since the 11th-12th centuries, with the arrival of the Turkic-speaking tribes from Central Asia. For two centuries after their appearance in Iran, the Oghuz had only oral literature.
The Azerbaijani literary language developed mainly on the basis of the Oghuz and Kipchak tribal languages, but was greatly influenced by the Arabic and Persian languages. The saturation of the Azerbaijani literary language with the Arabic-Persian vocabulary has largely alienated it from the folk-spoken language. With the Mongol invasions of the 13th century, the process of Turkization of Azerbaijan, which began in the previous period, is intensifying; by the end of the 15th century, it led to the emergence of the Azerbaijani people with their own language of the Turkic group. Written, classical Azerbaijani literature began after the Mongol invasion and began to develop in the 16th century after the Safavid dynasty established its dominance in Iran. Azerbaijani literature developed under the strong influence of Persian literature, and authors who wrote in the Azerbaijani-Turkic language were usually bilingual.
